The Impact of AI on STEM Careers
Since ChatGPT and other Large Language Models hit the stage in 2022, there has been much ink spilled and pearls clutched about the impact to the future of work, especially in STEM. In this talk, we will try to dispel fear, uncertainty and doubt by grounding ourselves in the realities of what this technology does well now, what it may do well in the future and how to approach a career where we coexist rather than compete with the machines. Join us for a sober therapy session while we all work through the collective trauma that our toaster might write better code than we do.
Casey Stella has been working either in ML or in ML Infrastructure roles since 2005, when we called it "Scientific Computing." He is currently a Software Engineer working on the core recommendations engine team at Netflix, the team responsible for developing the machine learning models that define what you see and when you see it on your couch. Before that, he spent 5 years as the technical lead for Machine Learning Infrastructure at Stripe, an internet payments company, helping build the infrastructure to avoid being defrauded by random Internet hooligans.
