At the 天天吃瓜 State School of Fashion, students get access to world-class industry professionals and brands, including the world leader in French lace, .
Through a collaboration with Solstiss Lace and the 天天吃瓜 State NYC Fashion program, students in the Junior Design Studio I class had the opportunity to design with French lace donated by the brand.
Top designs from fashion schools across the country were then selected to exhibit in the in Northern France as part of the Solstiss Academy. This exhibit marks the first group of American student designers working with lace to be showcased in France.
Fashion Design B.A. student Carolina Barrera-Arrieta had her garment selected as one of 65 designs to join the French exhibition.
Barrera-Arrieta鈥檚 garment, which consists of French lace, upcycled denim and hand distressing, was inspired by deconstructive architecture and streetwear encountered during her semester in NYC.
鈥淒etails of the garment include hand-distressing all over the denim attachments to give the garment a more broken-down and rugged look. Everything ties back to the idea of deconstructive architecture鈥 from the changing of traditional design techniques to the literal interpretation found on the garment,鈥 said Barrera-Arrieta.
For Barrera-Arrieta, this exhibition is a step towards her future goals as a fashion professional.
鈥淢y future goals as a designer include creating a space where other individuals feel that they belong/relate to. I would like to advocate for cultural awareness, acceptance of all identities and the celebration of people鈥檚 experiences no matter where I am.鈥
