Sheryl Chatfield, Ph.D., associate professor in the College of Public Health and Kristen DeBois, Ph.D., assistant professor of public health at Muskingum University are investigators on a grant awarded by the Appalachian Children Coalition to improve the health and wellness needs of youth in Appalachia Ohio through the study “Using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) to Assess Social Media Use among Adolescent Males in Appalachian Ohio.” The research is being carried out in partnership with Rick Fulkerson, Ed.D., at Muskingum Valley Health Centers, who will facilitate participant recruitment in Muskingum County, Ohio schools. Participants will be assessed using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), a process to solicit real time information regarding social media activity and measure mood, with the help of retrospective journal entries and debriefing focus groups.

Tara Smith, Ph.D., professor of epidemiology, has been appointed by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) to the interim Health Scientific Advisory Council of the newly-established ASM Health Scientific Unit. The council includes leaders and experts across health-related microbiology disciplines and provides strategic guidance to ensure ASM Health’s initiatives are impactful. 

“I'm excited to be a part of ASM's reorganization and to help lead the inaugural Health Scientific Unit,” says Smith. “As we confront the potential of another emerging pandemic and the ever-present threat of antibiotic resistance, the organization's restructuring will allow for a more nimble response to whatever we may face.”

Melissa Zullo, Ph.D.

Melissa Zullo, Ph.D.

Melissa Zullo, Ph.D., professor of epidemiology and associate dean for academic and faculty affairs, has been elected vice president of the Թ City Board of Health. Appointed in 2022, Zullo will serve as member of the board until the end of 2027. 

"I am truly honored to serve the City of Թ and the Թ community in this new role, and I am committed to making a positive impact," says Zullo.
