Students from the College of Podiatric Medicine have the opportunity to participate in a one-month elective clinical clerkship in the Diabetic Foot Clinic at San Donato Hospital in Arezzo, Italy. During these clinical experiences, students will experience first-hand interprofessional education through structured multidisciplinary collaborations. The clinical exposure will be augmented by case discussions and lectures by specialists in diabetes, on topics such as diabetic foot complications, infectious disease, musculoskeletal imaging, and vascular surgery. The Arezzo Clerkship is the first international clerkship for any college of podiatric medicine.

Program Highlights

Students will be gaining experience at the Diabetic Foot Clinic at San Donato Hospital in Arezzo, Italy. Students interested in this clerkship will be expected to work 40 hours per week. During this clerkship, students will experience both inpatient and outpatient activities, surgical interventions, noninvasive vascular testing, including vascular ultrasound, vascular imaging, and endovascular surgery. The program will expose the students to experiences in a different form of system-based healthcare when compared to the United States healthcare system.  While students do not actively participate in examination or patient care, this opportunity provides a wealth of knowledge and experience for students. The director of the San Donato Diabetic Foot Care Units is known on an international level, well respected in the field of Diabetology and the diabetic foot. The hospital faculty are very academic and well published.

Eligibility & Program Requirements

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher to be eligible. Students must be in good academic standing with no deficiencies while currently enrolled.
  • Passage of APMLE Part I for the first time.
  • This program does not accept students for placements in the months of August, December, or January.
  • If you already have a clerkship or clinical rotation scheduled, you cannot replace/switch it to schedule the Arezzo clerkship.
  • Students must not have health-related or other contraindications to international travel.
  • Students must have satisfactorily passed a drug test.
  • Students must be up to date on all the KSUCPM required healthcare immunizations.
  • An interview may also be required by the college administration.

Program Requirements

A student may be removed from the clinical program who does not cooperate with the staff, and/or demonstrates unprofessional or inappropriate behavior, and/or demonstrates unsatisfactory performance, and/or whose health may be a detriment to the functioning of the clinical sites.

  • The student may be immediately removed from the premises if that student represents a threat or danger to the staff or quality of medical services or has been convicted of any offense.
  • The student must be compliant with the policies and procedures of the institution and follow all instructions of the chief operating officer with regard to regulations and procedures on prevention and safety in the workplace.
  • Students must be aware of their obligation to maintain the confidentiality of all patients of the facility, and the processing of any personal data is only allowed in compliance with European and national standards.
  • Students must purchase travel insurance. International medical and evacuation insurance will be provided by KSU and billed to the student.
  • Students are responsible for transportation costs to and from the facility and while on rotation.
  • Students are responsible for food costs while on rotation.
  • Students are responsible for all travel, housing, and living expenses.
  • Each student must wear the uniform and name badge provided by the facility.
  • Lockers will be provided at the hospital.
  • Students will not be compensated by the facility for their participation in this clinical experience.
  • Students are not employees of the facility and as such are not entitled to the benefits of the employees of the facility.
  • Students will be required to maintain a confidential log of their experiences, write an essay describing the experience, complete an evaluation form and provide a case report or similar activity for presentation upon their return to the college.
  • The student must submit proof of a negative tuberculosis test in the preceding 12 months. The student must notify the facility of a positive test for infectious or contagious diseases, including tuberculosis hepatitis, or other infectious diseases.
    • If you test positive for TB, you must submit the following within the preceding 12 months. A blood test, Interferon Gamma Release Assay (Quantiferon-TB Gold In-Tube or T-Spot).
      • An IGRA is required for students with a past BCG vaccine who have tested positive with a PPD unless they have a positive IGRA in the past.
      • A chest x-ray is required for positive TB testing (PPD or IGRA).
      • Provide copies of reports for chest x-rays, blood tests, TB treatment statement, and PPD results.
  • Ensure that the student is aware of and must submit or provide a background of the toxicology test before entering the clinical program.
  • Students will be under direct supervision and direction by facility faculty at all times. Students should not provide care and services to any patient without supervision.
  • The facility will provide a written evaluation of the students' performance and experience.
  • The director of the facility will provide adequate guidance for students.
  • The facility will provide emergency medical care or other healthcare services and its cost will be paid by the student according to the Italian regulation for healthcare in favor of nationals from other states.

1. Start an Education Abroad Application

When you click the "Apply Now" button (located towards the top and bottom of this page), you will be brought to the Education Abroad application system where you can view program costs and start an application. Be sure to submit your application before the deadline!

2. Guest Application (If applicable)

3. Wait for Acceptance

Once you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed by an Education Abroad Advisor. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis.

4. Commit to the Program

If you are accepted, you need to log back into your application by going to  and clicking LOGIN. Once you see the name of your program, you need to click on it and commit (i.e., accept your offer of admission).

The city is located on a rising hill, and half of it, which is uphill, is historical, and the other half, downhill, is more modern. Prior to your study abroad experience, you will participate in a mandatory pre-departure orientation hosted by the Office of Global Education. During this orientation, you will be provided with information including but not limited to:
