KSU Kickoff Check-In (Residential Students)

  • Required for all first-year students living in the residence halls.
  • This is your opportunity to learn about the KSU Kickoff schedule and meet with a Peer Success Mentor (PSM) to get your questions answered.
  • Students should attend this event based on their personal availability between the hours of 3 - 8 p.m. in the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï Student Center Ballroom. 
  • Check-in times are not assigned; however, attendance will be recorded upon student arrival. 
  • For only first-year, ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï students living on-campus, in a residence hall. Commuting students will be required to attend a different check-in session on August 16, 8  - 9 a.m. (more details can be found in the app and KSU Kickoff website). 

Fall in a Flash

  • Still have a last-minute business to take care of before classes start? After you check in for KSU Kickoff (as a residential student on 8/15/24) just come over to the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï Student Center Dining Room (room 218) to get help. 
  • We will have several offices available to assist you with questions related to your scholarships, student loans, billing payment information, class registration/advising, military-connected benefits, student accessibility services, and transfer of credits, etc.

Hillel Ice Cream Social

  • Join Hillel for free ice cream! Come make new friends as they celebrate the start of the semester together and win some raffles too! 
  • This event occurs from 3 - 6 p.m. at the Hillel Building (613 East Summit Street) under the Water Tower. 

LGBTQ+ LLC Meet and Greet

  • Come and meet the other residents living in the LGBTQ+ Living Learning Community, along with the staff from the LGBTQ+ Center at the LGBTQ+ LLC Meet & Greet! 
  • During the event, students will get a chance to participate in a Speed Friending activity. 
  • Then enjoy pizza while painting and discussing upcoming programming and ways to get involved.
  • Event is from 4 - 5:30 p.m. in the LGBTQ+ Center in the lower level of the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï Student Center 

College of Aeronautics and Engineering LLC Meet & Greet 

  • Come one, come all! Join the College of Aeronautics and Engineering in meeting fellow Living Learning Community members, building connections, and learning more about the CAE LLC events and resources.

The LITA Fall Kickback! 

  • Welcome to the LITA Fall Kickback! Join the College of the Arts for a fun meet and greet!

Honor's College Welcome

  • The Honors College would like to welcome our incoming class of Fall 2024. This will be an ice cream social where you can mingle with your classmates and participate in fun games and also meet upperclassmen and the Honors College staff to ask any Honors College questions. 
  • 5-7 pm outside the Honors College main office and under the Stopher/Johnson Bridge Lounge.

Women's Soccer vs. Cleveland State University

  • Come down to Dix stadium to support our women's soccer program as they face off against Cleveland State at 7 p.m.!

KSU Kickoff Commuter Check-In

  • This event is required for all first-year students classified as commuting to and from campus. This is your opportunity to learn about the KSU Kickoff schedule and meet with ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï staff and students to get your questions answered.  
  • Students should attend this event based on their personal availability between the hours of 8 - 9 a.m.  
  • The location is room 306 ABC of the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï Student Center (third floor of the building). 
  • Check-in times are not assigned; however, attendance will be recorded upon student arrival.  
  • Student guides will be present at 306 ABC at 9:15 a.m. after this check-in concludes to take students to their Dean's Welcome location, which starts at 9:30 a.m. 

Escort to Dean's Welcome

  • Need assistance locating your Dean's Welcome location? Stop by Risman Plaza right in front of the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï Student Center.
  • Between 9 a.m. - 9:15 a.m. 
  • Peer Success Mentors (PSMs) will escort students to their specific Dean's Welcome location by college. 

Dean’s Welcome 

  • Come together with other students in your college to meet your Dean. 
  • You'll build some pride for your major and new academic home before going to Convocation together. All new students are required to attend the Dean's Welcome for their respective college.

  • These events will take place from 9:30 - 10 a.m. at various locations. 

Convocation 

  • This event is required for all new students.
  • Convocation introduces incoming first-year students to the administration of the university and serves as their first academic ceremony.
  • 10:30 a.m. | Memorial Athletic Convocation Center (MACC) 

Make Your MarK (K Picture) 

  • This event is required for all first-year students. 
  • Class of 2028! Follow your Peer Success Mentors (PSMs) from Convocation in the Memorial Athletic Convocation Center (MACC) to the Centennial Court Green for your class photo! The “K†picture will promptly begin at 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

First-Year Student Lunch 

  • Head to the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï Student Center directly after the Class of 2028 photo for lunch provided by University Culinary Services. 
  • Make sure to have your FLASHcard on hand. 
  • This event will take place from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï Student Center Ballroom and/or Room 218 (of the student center). 

Ice Cream with the College of Arts and Sciences Dean

  • Come grab some A&S Swag and have Ice Cream with the Dean of Arts & Sciences
  • 2 - 4 p.m. at the Bowman Hall Patio.

Common Conversations 

  • Common Conversations is a shared experience designed for first year and transfer students to connect through common dialogue and to engage in activities that will create a deeper connection to ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï before the start of classes. 
  • Your room location on Friday, August 16, is determined by your Fall Flashes 101 course section. The time of your Common Conversations Shared Experience is determined by your college.

Global Block Partys 

  • The Global Block Party is a chance to make new friends, tie-dye an exclusive Global Block Party t-shirt, listen to a live DJ, and play fun carnival and lawn games! There will also be food trucks on site so you can grab a quick snack!
  • This event will take place from 2 to 4:00 p.m. at the Van Campen Hall Lawn 

Fresh Start - Cookies in Crawford

Innovators Hub: Kickoff Music Fest 

  • Indulge in live music, an immersive virtual music exhibition, and a VIP lounge with exclusive gifts. 
  • Explore beyond the dining hall to see all that the DI Hub has to offer ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State students.  
  • Happening from 2 - 4 p.m. Hosted by LaunchNET and Design Innovation.

EHHS College Connections 

  • Stop by an EHHS College Connections table and get information about College events, academic programs, and services.
  • This event will occur from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. 
  • Tables will be located in the MACC Annex 2nd floor hallway outside room 292, Nixson Hall 1st floor lobby, and White Hall 1st floor lobby (Moulton side). 

University College: Handel's Ice Cream Pops

  • Come out to meet the University College Dean, faculty, and staff before the school year starts!

CCI Ice Cream Social

  • Join Amy Reynolds, Dean of the College of Communication and Information for ice cream in the 2nd Floor Gallery of Taylor Hall.
  • From 5 - 6:30 p.m. at the second floor gallery of Taylor Hall.

Late Night at the Library

  • Kick off the school year with Late Night at The Library
  • 8 – 11 p.m. at the Library
  • This will be a party where you can hang out with friends over free pizza and Handel’s ice cream! Enjoy a live DJ, a dance party, games, Esports, and giveaways. 
  • You can also meet your friendly librarians, who are here to help you during your time at ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State! 
  • This year’s theme is GLOW, so bring your light-up gear and join the fun!  

Food Truck Showcase

  • Come to the Risman Plaza/Student Green from 5 - 8 p.m. on Friday, August 16 to enjoy our Food Truck Showcase!  
  • Four local food trucks will be in attendance. They include Roll Call Burgers and Fries, Brooks Homestyle BBQ, The Flaming Marshmallow, and Erie Street Kitchen. 
  • The first 500 students will get one free voucher, valued at a $6 sampling, to be redeemed at one of these food trucks.  
  • Purchasing food off the menu of these businesses is also an option!  
  • Also, you can enjoy yard games, music, and Insomnia Cookies!  
  • Make sure to bring your FLASHcard to check in to this event. Will not be able to receive a voucher without one.

Kayaking and Tubing with Adventure Center

  • The Adventure Center will be offering free kayak lessons and river tubing at Tannery Park (near the Farmer’s Market). 
  • Learn kayaking skills or take a leisurely float down the historic and beautiful Cuyahoga River on an inflatable tube. 
  • Friendly Adventure Center staff will be there to assist you. Enclosed shoes or sandals with a back strap are required.
  • 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. - Tannery Park- downtown ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï (100 Stow Rd.) 

Flashes Flourish Health Fair

  • Get to know your health and well-being resources on and around campus. Gather with your friends to board the trolley or SPIN downtown to the Haymaker Farmer’s Market or the Adventure Center trip. 
  • Attend and you will have the chance to win $50 for the Haymaker Farmer’s Market! 
  • Also, DIY First Aid Kits! Build and decorate a first-aid kit with DeWeese Health Center!  
  • Visit the DeWeese Health Center parking lot on Saturday, August 17th between 9 am and 1 pm at the Flashes Flourish Health Fair. DIY first aid kits will be available while supplies last! 

Plants and Public Health

  • Join the College of Public Health for Plants and Public Health! They will have pots to paint, seeds and plants for you, and some public health information and fun! 
  • Event is at the DeWeese Health Center from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. 

Haymaker Farmers’ Market Trip with the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State of Well-Being

  • Did you know Portage County’s oldest producer’s only farmers market is right in your backyard?! 
  • Take a free trolley, scoot, bike or walk downtown to shop locally with the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State of Well-being at the Haymaker Farmers' Market. 
  • Stock up on yummy prepared foods, locally grown fruits and veggies, fresh-cut flowers, roasted coffee, handmade soaps, art, and more! 
  • Walk around to learn about the local farming community and meet friendly local makers. Free shopping bags to carry your great finds while supplies last!
  • 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. - Meet us at our blue and gold Well Hut tent at the DeWeese Health Center. 

Open Skating at the Ice Arena 

  • Stop by the Ice Arena to enjoy some ice skating on the main rink. Skates will be available to rent at no charge on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • This event occurs from 1:30 - 4:30 p.m. 

Fraternity and Sorority Life Festival

  • Fraternity and Sorority Life Festival (FSL Fest) is an opportunity for ALL STUDENTS to come meet all 30 of our fraternities and sororities here at KSU! 
  • FSL Fest is from 3 - 5 p.m. at the Tri Towers Rotunda.  
  • There will be giveaways and fun prizes!

RecWellcome Back Party

  • Come experience lots of games, activities, prizes and fun!
  • Activities include food trucks, rappelling from the indoor track, archery, rock climbing, sand volleyball, basketball, a DJ patio party, and more! 
  • Tours and free equipment orientations will also be available to help you become familiar with the SRWC. 
  • Participants will receive a passport to use for chances to win prizes including t-shirts, water bottles, hammocks, gift certificates, and more!

Dive-in Movie: "Finding Nemo" 

  • Join your peers for an evening of fun at the RecWellcome Back Dive-in Movie at the SRWC Natatorium.

LGBTQ+ Fall Kick Off

  • Join the LGBTQ+ Center and other campus resource offices for the LGBTQ+ Fall Kick Off event,   
  • hosted in the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï Student Center ballroom from 2 - 4p.m. on Sunday 8/18.
  • This event is a resource fair, and also includes two optional 'speed friending' opportunities for students wanting to meet new friends.  
  • The first 200 students will receive free rainbow sunglasses, and two students will also win $250 each to university bookstore. Light refreshments provided. All students are welcome! 

Transfer Student Welcome Reception 

  • University Orientation and Visit Experience invite all new transfer students to a special welcome reception.  
  • Reconnect with the TKS Ambassadors you met at orientation, meet and mingle with other incoming transfer students, get some KSU swag and play some games all while enjoying some Handel's ice-cream and other treats.
  • Event takes place from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Center for Undergraduate Excellence (CUE) Key Bank Lounge 

Blastoff and Athletics Pep Rally

  • Meet us at the Risman Plaza, Student Green, and Manchester Field on Sunday, August 18 from 5 – 7:30 p.m. for a chance to meet student organizations (over 200), learn about ways to get involved on campus, play games, win prizes, snag exclusive giveaways, talk with various campus departments and services, and create new friendships!

We’ve Got Your Back 

  • An event that connects military beneficiaries to on and off campus resources. CAVS Staff members will also do an in-depth benefits orientation for veterans, service members, and their dependents.
  • This event will occur from 4. - 6 p.m. in the third floor of the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï Student Center (room 306 ABC). 

Q'ommunity 

  • The LGBTQ+ Center hosts two social groups as an informal space for students to connect and talk about things that are important to you! 
  • The groups meet bi-weekly. Every week there will be an opportunity to participate in one! 
  • The two groups are: 
    • Q'ommunity (OPEN group for anyone in the LGBTQ+ community, including those that are questioning). 
    • QTPOC (a CLOSED group for Queer and Trans People of Color). 
  • Q'ommunity's first meeting will be meeting on Tuesday, August 20. QTPOC's first meeting will be on August 27. 
  • This event will be held from 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. in the LGBTQ+ Center in room 024 of the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï Student Center. 

FAB Tune Trivia

  • Tune Trivia is a fun trivia where students will do their best to see if they can finish the lyrics to popular music for fun prizes!

  • Please join us in the School of Peace and Conflict Studies to learn more about how to deal with random roommates, classmates, and even professors you might be annoyed with... Whether you consider yourself a people person, feel drained being around others, or are still learning how to set boundaries within your relationships, gain resources and insights about the problems that arise with people.
  • This session will provide tips and tricks for when you are grappling with someone you disagree with in the classroom and beyond.

Walking Down to Flashes First Thursday with FAB, USG, or FSL!

  • Looking to attend Flashes First Thursday, but do not know exactly how to get to Downtown ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï? If this applies to you, you are in luck!
  • Come to the Risman Plaza in front of the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï Student Center at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, August 22, and walk down to Flashes First Thursday with the Flash Activities Board (FAB)!
  • You can also come to the Risman Plaza at 4 p.m. to walk down with Undergraduate Student Government (USG).
  • Lastly, at 4:15 p.m., Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) will be walking down to Flashes First Thursday from Risman Plaza at 4:30 p.m.

Flashes First Thursday 

  • All students are welcomed to an event in downtown ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï where students can get to know the area and the shops/services available to them as members of the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï community. 
  • Also, come for exclusive giveaways courtesy of Athletics, raffle prizes, and live music from The Michael Weber Show!
  • Will have an incentive activity on hand for students to participate in that will have them explore the different businesses downtown in order to possibly win raffle prizes upon completion.
  • This part of the event will take place from 4 – 7 p.m., while the concert portion with The Michael Webber Show will be from 7 – 9 p.m. 
  • This event will take place starting at E. Erie Street where you will check in at anytime between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., to N. Water Street, where you will turn in the completion of the incentive activity by 7:00 p.m., to all of downtown ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï in between.

LGBTQ+ Center Shuttle to Akron Pride 

  • Interested in attending Akron Pride Festival on Saturday, August 24, but need a ride? The LGBTQ+ Center is providing a free shuttle service to KSU students!  

  • Registration is open now and closes Sunday, August 18 at 11:59pm.  

  • The Pride Shuttle is only available to students enrolled at ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State for the Fall 2024 semester. Unable to transport non-enrolled students, recent graduates, or community members.

  • The shuttle will have a wheelchair lift, but the bus may only accommodate 1-2 wheelchair users at a time. 

  • If you will need accessibility accommodations, please contact Meghan Schwind at 330-672-2156 or mschwin1@kent.edu to confirm availability of space.

  • Event takes place from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Shuttle to Akron will start at the KIVA Auditorium. 

Picnic With A Purpose with FAB and Community Engaged Learning 

  • To close the KSU Kickoff experience, come out to the Risman Plaza and Student Green for picnic food, fun activities, service projects courtesy of Community Engaged Learning, and an outdoor showing of the movie The Lorax.  
  • The picnic portion of this event will take place from 6 – 8 p.m.
  •  The movie portion of this event will begin at 8 p.m.
