Travel Abroad Resources

To have the trip of a lifetime, there are a few things you should consider keeping you 鈥淚n the Know.鈥

  • First things first: update your bio and/or let your friends and family know that you are on the move and traveling.
  • Be careful not to reveal too much info to everyone; keep the specifics like your hotel location between you and those close to you.
  • Never send money or share financial information, even if the person claims to be in an emergency.
  • Never share information that could be used to access your financial accounts.
  • Never share your personal information such as your social security number, home or work address, or details about your daily routine with people you do not know.
  • Know the laws for where you are going; from free speech to smoking, you may be surprised at what is considered an offense punishable by law in different cities/countries. Make sure you take the time to understand the laws and customs of your destination to avoid a serious situation that could ruin your trip.
  • If you are LGBTQ+, be aware of which countries penalize same-gender attraction.
  • Be wary of anyone who will not meet in person or talk on a phone/video call, they may not be who they say they are; if someone is avoiding your questions or pushing for a serious relationship without meeting or getting to know you first, that is a red flag.
  • Meet for the first few times in a populated, public space, and have your phone on you and charged; do not be in a rush and take the time and get to know the other person before agreeing to meet in person.
  • Be in control of your own transportation of how you plan to get to and from meeting the other person so that you can leave whenever you want.
  • f you feel uncomfortable, leave; it is okay to end the date early if you are feeling uncomfortable. Meet up in places like restaurants, museums, parks, bars, coffee shops, etc.
