Engineering Technology Department

Engineering Technology is your gateway to an exciting career in engineering in emerging technologies such as:

  • Additive Manufacturing
  • Alternative Energy
  • Drones
  • Electric Vehicles
  • Robotics

What Is Engineering Technology?

Engineering technology is a branch of engineering education that emphasizes the practical aspects of engineering, rather than abstract concepts or theories. It is more hands-on than traditional engineering education, but still provides a pathway to a career as an engineer.

What is the Difference Between Engineering and Engineering Technology?

The difference between engineering and engineering technology is blurred and the two often overlap. In a nutshell:

  • Engineering is more theoretical typically requiring higher-level mathematics with multiple semesters of calculus and calculus-based science courses.
  • Engineering technology is more hands-on and application oriented typically focusing on algebra, trigonometry, applied calculus. Technical courses are more practical in nature. If you are a practical hands-on oriented individual, engineering technology could be right for you!
Specific to the Engineering Technology Department
  • Low instructor to student ratios (on average 1:17) gives students personalized attention and plans of study. This gives students clarity about their degree requirements and enables them to meet their academic goals.
  • The Engineering Technology Department has friendly and knowledgeable staff and faculty members who are dedicated to helping students.
  • Students are also able to join organizations like the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and can be involved in nationwide competitions which helps connect them to other students and to the campus.
What is ABET Accreditation, and Why is it Important?

is an accreditation board for college and university programs in the disciplines of applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology at the associate, bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degree levels. With ABET accreditation, students, employers and the society we serve can be confident that our program meets the quality standards that produce graduates prepared to enter a global workforce.

The 天天吃瓜 at Tuscarawas Mechanical Engineering Technology (AAS) degree has been ABET accredited since 1974, our Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology (AAS) degree since 1978 and our BS Engineering Technology degree since October 2017.

What this means is:

  • The 天天吃瓜 at Tuscarawas Engineering Technology degree has been recognized to meet the global standard for technical education in the engineering technology profession.
  • It enhances the employment opportunities of our graduates, as many multinational corporations require graduation from an accredited program.
  • It supports the ability of our BS Engineering Technology graduates to pursue a Professional Engineers license, as graduation from an ABET-accredited program is a minimum qualification.
  • It paves the way for our graduates to work globally, because ABET accreditation is recognized worldwide through international agreements.
Networking Opportunities
  • Students have the opportunity to learn from faculty members many who are local industry specialists. This provides students not only with cutting edge practices, but also with contacts from local businesses.
  • The Division of Engineering Technology has many partnerships with local industry through internships that are offered typically in a student鈥檚 sophomore year.
  • Many of our current students, not to mention our alumni, have full-time positions in engineering; the collaborative nature of our program leads to a vast amount of networking opportunities.

Transfer Student Opportunities

The unique 2+2 nature of our BS Engineering Technology degree makes our program a good fit for the incoming transfer student. For a student with a previously earned qualifying AAS Degree track, our BS Engineering Technology degree can be completed in two years or at your own pace. The major courses are offered online and at the 天天吃瓜 State Regional Campus tuition rate; the resulting degree is fully ABET Accredited.

For example:

  • For student with a previously earned Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology, or Alternative Energy Engineering Technology (AAS) degrees it is possible to complete a BS in Engineering Technology with a concentration in Mechanical/Systems, Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology, or Green and Alternative Energy Technology, respectively.
  • For student with any other previously earned engineering technology (AAS) degree or two years in a qualifying engineering technology program degree it is possible to complete a BS in Engineering Technology with a concentration in Integrated Engineering Technology.
