The School of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) at ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï has hired Thor Wasbotten, M.S., as its new director. Wasbotten will join the university July 1 to replace Jeff Fruit, who steps down after 10 years as the school’s leader to teach full time.

Wasbotten most recently served as the assistant dean for student media and online operations at The Pennsylvania State University, where he also was a senior lecturer of journalism. 

Golden Flashes will play elimination game Monday, June 18, at 5 p.m.

The ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State baseball team (46-18) won in dramatic style June 11, as Derek Toadvine scored the game’s winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a one-out double by ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State all-time hits leader Jimmy Rider to give the Golden Flashes a 3-2 victory over Oregon in the Eugene Super Regional, hosted by the University of Oregon. The victory sent ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State to the College World Series for the first time in program history, which dates back to 1915.

WKSU has been honored with two Regional Edward R. Murrow awards from the Radio-Television-Digital News Association (RTDNA). The organization received thousands of regional entries in categories covering radio, television and online journalism.

The ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï/Blossom Music Festival is an advanced training institute operated by ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï in cooperation with The Cleveland Orchestra and Blossom Music Center. This summer intensive program presents public performances by distinguished artist faculty and talented young musicians.

The 2012 season was certainly one to remember for the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State men's golf team. The No. 17 ranked Golden Flashes advanced to the match-play portion of the NCAA Championship and secured the highest finish in school history by tying for 5th in the nation. In the match-play quarterfinal, ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State fell by a count of 3-1-1 to No. 2 Alabama.

All five team members are from the Division of Information Services, and include: Brendan Walsh, Ruth Ruggles, Dolly Lowe, Kathy Meeker and Kathleen Banas. The group, led by Walsh who dropped 34 pounds, lost a total of 85 pounds during the competition.

ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï is one of five institutions selected to host the 2012 Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq this summer. The prestigious program is sponsored by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars and supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

Movers and Groovers is an annual volunteer event, sponsored by the ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï Interhall Council, that is designed to help first-year students move into their residence halls.

To facilitate long-term planning for some departments, ÌìÌì³Ô¹Ï State is announcing that the annual steam shutdown will be from 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, 2013, through 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2013. Steam will not be available on most of the campus. Many areas will not have hot water, heat, and/or air conditioning.
